I would like to suggest changing the display of when walking. Currently I have no graphical examples how it could look, but in general it could look maybe something what cgeo have made: compass view, simple map display (with North at the top of the screen).

Why? Please describe it in more detail. And screenshots are preferable, of course.

P.S. There is already a "compass" view if you select an object on the map, and then press a small arrow with distance on the bottom panel.

Reasoning for this suggested change is that while walking and you want to check up on progress, one would probably hold it in one hand most of the time. For such case, maybe the zoom out/in buttons could be lowered at the bottom in the middle (for easier reach with both hands). Next thing suggested feature (may not be ui change but functionality) is to make recenter location button just do only that, recenter your location pointer. This is because perspective view may not be necessary while walking and it can be a bit tedious to always select to recenter locarion and press it again to switch off perspective view.

P.S. Pictures of how I imagine it to look will be added later.

  1. Will voice instructions from the phone help in your walking scenario?
  2. Are you speaking about a city walking or hiking scenario?
  3. At the moment, the first press to location button always recenters the map, if it was not centered already (e.g. after you dragged it). Why do you need to remove the functionality of a second press on this button, after the map is already centered?

  1. I don't/haven't used voice instructions
  2. I'm talking about both scenarios.
  3. Well the second could stay, it's just that when I try to recenter my location, it does so while also rotating into the direction the user is looking (when personally I would prefer North to be the top).

(3) - Rotation mode should turn on only if the map is already centered. Otherwise, if North was on top, then pressing "current position" should center with North on top.

In navigation mode (when navigating a path to destination) it centers and rotates to the users direction (does not stay with North point at top). When normal view (when just simply looking at the map) does work the way you describe.

Thanks, got it. I think this issue was already mentioned somewhere else: The last position mode is not saved in the navigation mode in the same way, as it is saved when the normal "map view" mode is active.
