There are different approaches for representation of current speed speed and speed limit.
The main thing is that speed limit must be easily readable.
As a consequence possibility to disable it is provided.
Additional option is to show speed limit only when exceeding it.
Current speed sometimes is not present (Apple Maps and previously Google), sometimes it is small,
and sometimes it's even more readable than speed limit (Waze).
Some apps consider that USA and Canada have different signs from other world:

Another Screenshot from the magic earth app
When you want to check the speed limit you usually want to see it as fast as possible and focus on driving after seeing it. So it should be the shortest path for eyes. From my experience it's faster to focus on something that's on top because you generally have phone below line eyes and the path to look on right or right with slight down is fast and you don't have to move the eyes to the down corner of your phone (there's probably a paper on that but who cares :D).
Drawing ahead is interesting, but is it really helpful? Seeing screenshots would be great!
Sorry for low res but it's taken from a youtube video. I think it'd be helpful e.g. when you're on a long slight turn on straight road for example where you don't see that in e.g. 500 meters there's 100 instead of 120 or even 70 and then 50 so you could prepare to not push acceleration/break pedal but let the engine slow the car. Or if there's a sharp over 90° turn and there's 40 limit so you could prepare earlier and not accelerate because you've just left urban area(where it's 90 limit). I hope you understand :D
