Map of Egypt is one MWM file of 215 MiB. Let's split into smaller files. There are 27 regions in Egypt. We should split those 27 governorates in 4-5 groups.

Map of Bangladesh is one MWM file of 286 MiB. It should be splitted into 4 parts: Northern, Southern, Central, Eastern

Let me suggest the following grouping for the governorates in Egypt:

Source: https://en.m.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Egypt#Regions

This view of Egypt is rather common. It corresponds to physical geography (4 distinct regions), as well as the sociocultural landscape of the Nile valley and delta, which allows further subdivision of Lower, Middle and Upper Egypt. It makes total of 6 regions, which should be great for reasonably splitting 215 MiB into smaller parts.

Also Madagascar should be splitted. It has 6 provinces:

Also, please take a look at Vietnam.

Regarding Egypt, can someone try and share how big will be these regions? Maybe considering that OSM data will grow over time (and we'll add Wikipedia articles too), it makes sense to split regions initially into the current regional division. What do you think?

I suggest that Vietnam be divided into three regions (refer to map below, source)

  • Northern Vietnam composed of Northeast, Northwest and Red River Delta subregions
  • Central Vietnam composed of North Central Coast, South Central Coast and Central Highlands subregions
  • Southern Vietnam composed of Southeast and Mekong River Delta subregions

I'll be filing a pull request hopefully within this month that will divide Vietnam into three regions plus fixing various holes/gaps (there may be dozens if not hundreds of them between the Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos polygons, example in screenshot)

Thanks! It would be great to write/find some convenient tool, so everyone can easily edit polygons and avoid holes between them (e.g. share their edges).

For country polygons we don't need exact precision, the fewer points are used, the faster are our algorithms.
