The new editing option 'Building number' is great, but it should be disabled in Italy in my opinion, because here a single building can have multiple numbers; this is much better explained here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Addresses#Italy.

As a matter of fact, also StreetComplete has the "building number" quest disabled in Italy; as you can see in their app:

Interesting subject, we can use this issue to list countries where do not want to add or update number house

  1. @vng does it influence our search? Does it take addr:* tags from any objects (e.g. entrances), not only from buildings?
  2. Are all building addresses already mapped there?
  3. Does it make sense to have proper address editing support in Italy using OM? If yes, then how it should be done? Should address entries be displayed when a house entry is selected? Or should we allow adding an entry on the building's area border?

  1. Yes, in OSM you can set separate address nodes - and Italy is an example of this rule. Search is working with them.
  2. ??
  3. Should we ban editing Italy houses? I don't know for sure .. Yes, all major cities are already mapped with node addresses. But many houses in countryside have no numbers at all, and those few who has - mapped with addr:housenumber on building area feature. You can grab examples say on overpass, this is my query on random (not major cities) area https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1qJ1

For the long time we didn't have any complains from Italy OSM community about OM (maps.me) bad mapping.
@FinixFighter do you have any discussions in Italy OSM mapping groups? If local community will decide, we will ban it, I think.

I'm going to share this issue on the Italian OSM Telegram group and see what they say about this.

Hi, the rules about housenumber tag for Italy are already established by the community in the wiki article linked by FinixFighter and specifically in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/IT:Addresses#Regole_specifiche_per_l'Italia.
In Italy we number the accesses to buildings, and not the building itself that can have multiple entrances and so multiple housenumbers (there can be also multiple buildings that share the same housenumber).
It's not a matter of opinions as it derives from Italian Government laws, and OSM Italian community adopted the same approach for consistency,

I also would suggest to disable this function for Italy. The impression is that a user could be mistakenly tempted by this option to add an address to a building, not seeing it present, even in the case in an area all the addressed are perfectly mapped (considering Italian rules).
In addition to what IlBano wrote, I can add that sometimes the address is assigned not to the building entrance but to the entrance located on the outside fence.

(Deleting comment. According to the maintainer westnordost here, for the other countries different from than Italy, there is not a prohibition. Sorry for the noise.)

Thanks for the reminder. Disabling house numbers editing is one part of the story. What is the right solution to enable appropriate addresses editing in these countries?

In France, we create new POI at the frontier in street (public domain) and house (private domain) with addr:housenumber tag.
We create relation with type = associatedStreet and name of relation with name of street
And after we add POI in relation with role = house
