Thanks for your great work.

I love to use weblate.org in the near future for translating. It is much easier to translate for all contributors.
(it's free and also gratis for free software projects)

Sounds like a good idea. Do you know other community-driven services for translation? I'm not sure that Weblate is the most popular.

I love and recommend https://hosted.weblate.org/ as Crowdin and Transifex are proprietary and have dubious terms.

Many free and open source projects are using weblate. Like LibreOffice, Kodi, Fedora, openSuse, Cryptpad, Newpipe and 663 other projects. I use all 3 but weblate is the best!

There's also Phrase (former PhraseApp): https://phrase.com/ but it looks like there isn't a free/open-source tier.

It would be great if there was a way for general public to contribute translations conveniently.

I can recommend Weblate, as the platform itself is open source (compared to others), can be self hostable, and for open source projects like yours, they host translations for free. Weblate automatically makes pull requests afaik and if you want you can have a widget shown on github, that displays how much percentage each applied language has translated. It's much more simple for people to translate this way and it's free.

https://poeditor.com/ has a very nice interface for translators (I really dislike Transifex), but for example to pull translator statistics StreetComplete needed to make custom scrapper.

One can explore translation interface from here: https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#translating-the-app

@rtsisyk I can see the project now on weblate. https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/organicmaps/
Thanks for using weblate.org!

When can we start to translate? At the moment it is marked "WIP: Android - PLEASE DON'T USE"

@rtsisyk @biodranik I'm not sure. Can we start to translate the strings on weblate? On weblate there is still "WIP: Android - PLEASE DON'T USE"

Hi @nautilusx , Android && iOS are still not integrated. The problem is that we use our home-grown strings.txt format which is not supported by Weblate. We had a lot of debates of getting rid of this file and switching to regular Android/iOS translation files instead. It still looks like that this single file + generation tool is more flexible to maintain translations of Android/iOS in sync. Weblate has a feature of auto-translation for a component by using texts from another component, but it is really less convenient. The current understanding that we need a tool to synchronize strings.txt from Android/iOS files (backward conversion) OR implement strings.txt support in Weblate.

ok got it.If you want to improve the quality of translation in many languages, you need weblate. Otherwise the barriers are too high for non-developers.

@nautilusx, please take a look at https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps/discussions/4076. We need your opinion on that topic.

@rtsisyk The process looks good. I've started the german translation. I'm sure I'll be done with it in the next few days. I hope we can continue with the strings of the app soon.
In the end weblate should be the only source for translations to avoid conflicts.
