Describe the issue
As extensively discussed in the OSM forum, integrating OM users into OSM is sometimes a bit of a challenge. In particular, communication with OM users often doesn't work.

I tested it as a "new user". So when a new user wants to add a POI to OSM, OM opens a popup and says:

Do you want to send it to all users? Make sure you did not enter any private or personal data. OpenStreetMap Editors will check the changes and contact you if they have any Questions

This is the only information he/she gets about OSM and its also wrong (that's why I've opened this as a bug), no one checks/validates edits in OSM per se, it's all about self-responsibility.

In my opinion one very easy to fix first approach for this problem would be to show more information strings on the popup or the in-app login page about OSM, our rules and how they can communicate with us. Just some facts like:

  • Be accurate and avoid vandalism: Make sure the information you add is accurate, up-to-date, and consistent with the local situation. Do not make edits that are misleading or harmful or private.
  • Use appropriate categories: Only use place (POI) categories that best match the new place (POI) you have edited or added.
  • Communicate with the community: Every edit on OpenStreetMap can be commented on. These are called changeset comments, and they're the main form of communication, and you'll be notified by email when there are comments. So keep an eye on your mailbox. If you're not sure about something, don't hesitate to ask for help on the OSM Community Forum.
  • Additional resources: The OpenStreetMap Wiki is a comprehensive resource if you want to learn more about editing OpenStreetMap. The OpenStreetMap Forum is the official place where you can get help.
